International Arts & Disability group gathering in Wexford
Wexford Arts Centre in association with the Arts Department Wexford County Council will host a gathering of Arts & Disability groups from Wexford, Wales and Sweden on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd March 2013 for networking and cross cultural exchange. The weekend is supported by the Arts Council EU Local Partnership Scheme celebrating the diversity of artistic practice undertaken by artists and arts organisations based in Ireland in cooperation with their colleagues based elsewhere in Europe.
Participating groups from Wexford include Wexford County Council Arts Ability initiative participants from the Recreational Therapy Unit, St. Senan’s Hospital, Enniscorthy, Kilagoley Training & Activation Centre, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford Community Workshop, New Ross and Wexford Residential Intellectual Disability Services. Also attending will be participants from Windmill Therapeutic Training Unit in Wexford and participants from Aleana House who will take part in a pilot children’s arts workshop with local artist Mary Wallace.
Visiting Welsh groups include participants from Disability Arts Cymru Unusual Stage School for aspiring actors based in Cardiff and Celf O Gwmpas visual arts group primarily for adults with learning disabilities based in Powys. Swedish participants are represented by intellectually disabled musicians MB Rockers supported by Studieframjandet Tranas, a personal development support organisation in Sweden.
Public events will include:
Festive Equality workshop on Friday 22nd March at Wexford Arts Centre 2-5pm– a workshop for organisers of Festivals and Events who wish to ensure they are being as inclusive and accessible as possible, which will be facilitated by Rachel Stelmach of Disability Arts Cyrmu (Wales). This event is supported by Coracle – Ireland Wales project connecting creativity between South West Wales and South East Ireland part funded by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Ireland Wales Programme (INTERREG 4A)).

There will also be a Welcome launch at 7.30pm on Friday 22nd March at Wexford Arts Centre to include performances from Unusual Stage School and readings from the Kilagoley writers group and public speakers to include Padraig Naughton of Arts Disability Ireland. Visual art pieces from participants will also be on display in D’Lush Café and at Whites hotel where part of the networking events take place.
All are welcome to the Arts Disability Cabaret Saturday 23rd March 8pm at Whites Hotel featuring the MB Rockers, readings from Kilagoley writer’s group, Unusual Stage School, drama, music and comedy and support performance from Myriad Dance and host Helena Mulkearns with the Cáca Milís Cabaret house band Featherhead Trio. Tickets €10. All support welcome.
