Set in the early 1960s, Lay me Down Softly takes us into the burlesque world of the old Irish travelling carnival, introducing us to a troupe of hard-living and intriguing characters. In the boxing booth of Delaney’s Travelling Roadshow, life on the road is tough. However, when the young daughter of the boxing hall’s owner-cum-ringmaster shows up, things look set to change. Like his other plays, Roche’s Lay me Down Softly takes us back to a forgotten world and looks afresh at the familiar themes of love, loss and pain. This production premiered in National Theatre/Peacock Dublin in 2008 and was a sell out success. Billy Roche is a national and internationally renowned playwright for many works which include The Wexford Triology, Poor Beast in the Rain and most recently won the IFTA (Irish Film and Television) award along with Conor McPherson for best screenplay and film for Eclipse which was adapted from a short story from his Tales From Rainwater Pond collection. Tales from Rainwater pond written and performed by Billy Roche and produced by Wexford Arts Centre had a successful run at Irish Repertory Theatre in New York in 2009 as part of 1st Irish Festival and was critically acclaimed.
In this production of Lay Me Down Softly the audience is invited to dip down the shadowy ropey avenues to the sound of the churning calliope, to literally step inside the carnival, to experience, close up, the comings and goings of this wayward troop as this powerful myth unfolds. Smell it, sense it, feel it, hear it, become part of this dark and dangerous and colourful story, a mythic tale of love and loss and pain. Limited run and seating. Book early to avoid disappointment.
