Wexford Arts Centre is delighted to host an exhibition of prints by American artist Eve Stockton entitled Evolutionary Landscapes II.  The title of this exhibition derives from the artist’s close observation of nature and an eclectic interest in science. The exhibition contains prints made during the past few years that are exemplary of the artist’s ongoing investigation of the natural world. Her woodcuts depict nature at different scales, and whether micro or macro in scope, nature’s energy is evoked by the abstracted shapes and chromatic layering in each print.

Stockton’s practice is informed by the natural world observed and the primordial world imagined. Her imagery often starts off connected to a specific place and the prints seem familiar at first viewing. Upon closer observation, however, the imagery is rendered to suggest dichotomies, such as order/chaos and monumental/microbial.  The presentation of certain prints in series further informs themes of variation and emergence as well as individual forms and phenomena.

Utilizing a multifaceted background in architecture and art, the artist is able to engage the variables of printmaking, allowing her to produce an ongoing body of dynamic, graphic images. Stockton obtained degrees in architecture from Yale and Princeton University and it follows that the study of structures in nature is evident in her work.   Stockton currently lives and works in Virginia, and recent exhibitions include Evolutionary Landscapes, Pembroke Hall, Brown University, Providence, RI; Botanicals, H. Pelham Curtis Gallery, New Canaan Library CT; and Eve Stockton – Recent Work, Eykyn-Maclean Gallery, NYC.

Artist's Statement

Nature, science, myth and memory all provide inspiration for my artwork. With a focus on large-scale woodcuts, my recent prints are evocative of landscapes and cellular activity.  Utilizing a multifaceted background in architecture and art, I engage the variables of printmaking to produce an ongoing body of nature-based, graphic images.

My prints are about nature. Nature’s creative force is evoked by probing states of dynamic transition in general, and rhythms of individual forms and phenomena in particular. Organic patterns combine w/ shifts of light and color in a visual tapestry of abstracted form. The subject matter of these nature-based prints seems familiar at first. Upon closer observation, however, the imagery is rendered to suggest dichotomies, such as order/chaos, fragility/fecundity, and microcosm/macrocosm.
