Wexford Arts Centre is delighted to present a solo show by artist Andrew Kenny entitled A Helping Hand to Little Frogs and Periwinkles. The exhibition will present a series of video pieces and a large interactive sculpture in an attempt to explore how concepts of reality, the occult and paranormal are formulated according to individual belief systems.
Combining elements of Victorian beliefs and the modern, Kenny’s interactive sculptural piece is a play on the old and new. The work has an elegant inventive quality that references 19th century side-show attractions with its use of materials and construction whilst simultaneously referring to the modern arcade experience of videogames. Inside the piece, it allows the viewer to experience an alternative gallery space while exploring ideas of subconscious abilities such as out-of-body occurrences, astral projection and near death experiences. The work also explores ideas relating to our scientific view of the world and its dominance that has ridden us of the realities of a ‘soul space’.
The separate video pieces further explore the issues regarding the paranormal and the unexplained by presenting a number of themes such as dowsing, spontaneous images and mind over matter. The use of technology is also an important element of the ‘contraption building’.
Andrew Kenny graduated from the Wexford School of Art with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 having previously studied for three years at the Gorey School of Art. During his time in college, he undertook extensive research in various paranormal phenomena including spirit photography, thoughtography, psychic phenomena, ESP, telepathy etc. Kenny has continued with this research since graduation investigating the writings of Charles Fort and the work of so-called thoughtographer, Ted Serios which has resulted in the experimental works in this current exhibition.
