Wexford Arts Centre is proud to host its first exhibition of children’s work entitled How I See the World. The exhibition represents all stages of work, from the early experimental scribbles to the more realistic and sophisticated. The ages of the children whose work is exhibited range from 4 years to 16 years, and each young artist undertook work in response to the theme of How I See the World.

The role of the arts in the development of imagination in childhood is linked with children's need to explore and learn about their world. Children develop their own ideas of the world from an early age, and this exhibition provides an opportunity for them to simply enjoy the fun of artistic creativity. For the viewer, this exhibition offers the rare opportunity to discover what the youngest inhabitants of this culturally rich county think of their home.  As part of the exhibition, a number of the artists were invited to assist with the curation of the show.  Working with the exhibition team at the arts centre, the children had the opportunity to lay out and hang the work.

To coincide with this first exhibition of children’s art Wexford Arts Centre’s upper gallery will function as an art studio for children throughout the summer months.  The studio will have a range of material available to budding artists of all ages.  Parents will be able to partake in the activities or keep an eye on their children whilst relaxing with refreshments from D’Lush Café in our designated seating areas.  There will also be specialized art books for children and a range of toys to develop motor skills available to purchase throughout the exhibition, supplied by Juliana Walters through her shop/gallery Place.

A fun and exciting workshop programme is also planned for the summer months.  Due to the popularity of the Little Artists Club, we have scheduled a Little Artist Summer Camp aimed at age groups from 4-6 years and 7-11 years. During these workshops children will learn about a range of visual art processes, and will be encouraged to enhance their motor skills whilst working with a range of different materials.

We will also offer two summer courses available only to strict chocolate lovers! I Want to Lick the Spoon - Chocolate Camp offers parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles the opportunity to accompany their younger relatives to learn the art of chocolate making.  And Sticky Fingers – Chocolate Camp is open to all children from 8 years and over.  Both courses will be taught by Linda Larkin from D’Lush Café who learnt her chocolate making skills in Holland.

Two printmaking courses are also planned for the summer months.  Mini Prints is an opportunity for children to create their own colourful visual stories while experiencing the inky possibilities of printmaking!   Children will try their hand at various forms of printmaking using a range of materials and objects, and works of art will be made using Styrofoam, vegetables and more.  Children will be also given the opportunity to express their own individuality this summer and print their own wearable art!  In this workshop children learn basic design principles and all about printmaking.  Using various printing techniques such as stencilling and stamping students will make their own unique customized t-shirts and have an afternoon of fun!
