11th January – 15th May 2010

Wexford Arts Centre is delighted to present a photographic exhibition by Wexford born Conor O’Leary in D’Lush Café from Monday 11th January to Saturday 15th May 2010.

The Irish Traveller Community is a minority ethnic group, noted as being part of Irish society for centuries. With a long history and value system which includes their own language, customs and traditions, their lifestyle and culture, based on a nomadic tradition, sets them apart from the settled people. Aware of the visual clichés often associated with the Irish Traveller community, Conor O' Leary undertook a specific body of work with a small group of travellers living two miles outside New Ross, Co. Wexford. It was through work in photography and audio recordings, that it became apparent to the artist that these communities live in isolation, which is partly self imposed but also in response to how there are perceived from the settled communities.

Wexford born photographer, Conor O' Leary is currently based in London, where he will be studying for a MA in photojournalism at the University of Westminster, London in 2010. He graduated with a BA (Hons) in Photojournalism, Swansea Metropolitan University in 2009. Recent exhibition include Swansea Degree Show 2009 - Old Truman Brewery, Bricklane, London; and Swansea Degree Show 2009 - Swansea Metropolitan University, Swansea.
