Warming up for Wexford Opera Fringe Festival

14/10/2012

Picture
It's that time of year again when the weather is getting colder but festival season is getting warmer.  Wexford Festival Opera have a great line up of unique operas for their 61st Opera season.  see www.wexfordopera.com which runs from 24th October to 4th November.  Prior to the first opening of the first opera though the Wexford Fringe Festival will be off to a flying start with exhibition openings and events for all ages in a variety of venues throughout Wexford Town and environs from 19th October.  See Wexford Festival Opera Fringe for full details.  If a visitor to town and looking for accommodation as well as some information on Wexford Attractions to visit  see Visitwexford.ie.

Wexford Arts Centre starts off the Fringe Festival with "Billy The Member" and "Last Tango in Grimley" - two one act comedies by local Camross Drama Group on Thursday 18th and 19th October.  Saturday 20th October is a busy day for exhibition openings and we are delighted to host  exquisite abstract painting exhibitions featuring  Palimpsest by John Noel Smith and Long Journey in a Short Space by Marie Hanlon.  Art Historian Mairead Furlong will be our guest speaker for the opening event at 4pm.  We will also be celebrating the exhibition opening of Night and Day by Oonagh Latchford  in D'lush Cafe, another very fine Wexford based abstract and portrait  painter.  We welcome back as well Mary Wallace and Gilly Thomas to our Annexe space at No. 3 John Gate Street with their joint exhibtion ...fishes, cockerels, felines... comprising of a collection of new paintings and  sculptures exploring the natural side of life – pure intuitive shapes,  simplicity of lines and beauty of colour found in nature.  Wexford native and internationally renowned singer/musician Pierce Turner will be the guest speaker for the opening at 5pm.  More information on our exhibitions can be found on our  Current Exhibitions page.

3epkano have wowed audiences the world over with their stunning sound and vision projects and are dedicated to producing original soundtracks to silent,avant-garde, and contemporary cinema. They have  played numerous headline shows in both Ireland and
the US to critical acclaim. They have also been commissioned to
produce new music for a number of prestigious institutions
including The National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin Fringe               Festival, Film Society of Lincoln Centre and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in New York.

In 2008 the group took responsibility for curating the new alternative music strand at the  Kilkenny Arts Festival, a programme which included Mercury Rev, Spiritualized, and Lisa Hannigan to name but a few.

They returned to BAM in 2010 to premier their score for Diary of a Lost Girl and also performed earlier this year at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC to launch their winter movie calendar. Most recently they performed on the main stage at the Electric Picnic.  Delivering a life Soundtrack to Faust  -inspired by Goethe's adaptation of the Faust myth along with Gounod's opera you don't want to miss what will be a Wexford Opera Fringe festival highlight Saturday 20th October.

"Full of urgent percussion and sweeping strings, [the performance] owes a great  deal to pioneering Montreal post-rockers Godspeed You Black Emperor…..the overall effect was mesmerising."
Davin O’Dwyer - The Irish Times.

Another unique event takes place on Sunday 21st October 3pm when we are treated to a recital on very rare 18th Century Monart collection of Square Pianos with accompanying talk.  Enjoy refreshments from D'lush cafe also.

Phew! and that's just the Wexford Festival Opera opening weekend.  see www.wexfordartscentre.ie for info on all upcoming events including ghostly theatrical tours through our venue with Nocture productions..watch out for the real ghosts - yes they exist. We also have 3 One Act comedies from Wexford Drama, 47 Roses by Peter Sheridan, Jazz/Blues from the entertaining Zrazy and of course the annual Grand Samhain Cáca Mílis Cabaret, Jackula magic for kids as well as spooky Discovery Clubs, Little Artist Clubs and Scienitastic fun.

There is also the added treat of a Spiegletent on the Quays hosting a fantastic array of gigs from Bell X1 to Saw Doctors.  Don't miss an experience in this vintage oppulant 1920's style temporary venue brought in all the way from Amsterdam.  See Wexford Spiegeltent for all event info.  Wexford Arts Centre also selling tickets for Spiegeltent events online and at box office.  Click Buy Tickets

Watch this space for updates!  Have a wonderful Wexford Opera Festival and Fringe Festival!
