Material World

May 1, 2025 by Wexford Arts Centre

A textile sculpture by Lynn Haughton
Run in association with the Art in the Open Festival
In situ in the lobby of Wexford Arts Centre

Tuesday 22nd – Saturday 26th July

Accompanied by workshops facilitated by artists Lynn Haughton and Jeni Roddy.

‘Material World’ is a textile art sculpture created by Lynn Haughton, which symbolizes the suffocation of our natural world due to unnecessary overproduction. Focusing on fast fashion waste in particular, the globe has been created using discarded clothing.

There are enough clothes currently in existence on the planet that would be sufficient for the next 6 generations, and yet we still continue to produce over 100 billion items of clothing globally per year.

The lifted layer of the sculpture is representative of action and of choosing less. The succulents poking through are suggestive of hope and the resilience and regeneration of nature – when given the chance. These living plants are symbolic of life on earth and the force of nature, which we can choose to either work with or against.

Our actions matter. If we work more harmoniously with the natural world and choose to live more gently – then everything thrives and comes back into balance – including ourselves. Viewers are invited to post into the installation letterbox a pledge, a message, or wish to Mother Earth. These will be collated by the artist and shared in future works.

Lynn Haughton is the founder and creative force behind The Upcycle Movement, a multi-award-winning upcycling studio and community initiative. Lynn is a designer, artist, and environmental advocate whose work focuses on transforming waste into worth.

Her work ranges from product collections made from retired materials to thought-provoking textile art installations and sculptures.

Beyond her design work, she is dedicated to education and advocacy, leading workshops and talks in schools, universities, and community groups that inspire individuals and businesses to explore opportunities in upcycling and circular design.

Lynn’s dedication and innovative approach to her work have earned her recognition in both environmental and creative communities, positioning her as a leading voice in sustainable design in Ireland.
