Beyond these Walls
Wexford Campus School of Art and Design (IT Carlow)
BA (Hons) Fine Art Graduate Exhibition
Friday 19th May – Saturday 10th June 2017

Exhibition Opening: Thursday 18th May, 6pm
Opening Speaker: Artist Kathy Prendergast

Wexford Arts Centre in partnership with the Wexford Campus School of Art and Design (IT Carlow) are pleased to present the annual BA (Hons) Fine Art Graduate exhibition entitled Beyond these Walls. The exhibition will run from Friday 19th May to Saturday 10th June.

During the last four years, the students of the Wexford Campus have developed, experimented and honed their personal practices. This exhibition marks the start of each artist’s professional career, showcasing and celebrating their ongoing ability, dedication and determination to create strong visual work exploring themes and issues at the very core of everyday life.

Through painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and sculpture, the exhibition examines challenging topics prevalent within contemporary society such as cultural identity, diaspora and the mediation of war through various media. Wider areas of research such as psychology and gender identity are also touched upon, and the physical body is examined through movement and by scrutinizing small details such as skin marks and strands of hair to ascertain how they capture an individual’s identity.

Among such weighted themes, certain works also convey the enjoyment that can result from engaging in a creative process. Inspired by geometric forms and repetition, a series of paper sculptures deftly explore the relationship between light, surface and material, blurring our perception of what we think we should see as to what is actually there. A series of charcoal line drawings serve to integrate and touch upon the hidden activity of the subconscious and in doing so form an abstract language. The artist’s repetitive and cumulative process of drawing interrelates with the way in which thoughts occur, with each work has the potential to evoke a range of emotions. Capturing domestic scenes and mundane but extraordinary aspects of contemporary life, Beyond These Walls reflects a tangible and intrinsically human world, conscious of its faults and triumphs.

Beyond these Walls features work by Philip Bodger, Helen Cleary, Michelle Colfer, Ian Doyle, Elis K, Alyce Geraghty, Aoife Glynn, Emma Hearne, Shannon Keegan, Patsy Kent, Fiona Martin, Anne Martin Walsh, Meghan McLachlan, Catherine Murphy and Andrew Wickham. The exhibition officially opens at 6pm on Thursday 18th May with guest speaker artist Kathy Prendergast. All are welcome to attend.
